Fair Comment on Glasgow

Susan Aitken made a pretty fair, grown up comment on Twitter yesterday about the Labour Party and the fight for equal pay in Glasgow.

 No one has been more fiercely critical of Labour's track record over the years than me, but the facts speak for themselves and Labour is now prepared to move beyond empty slogans declaring its support for equal pay, that would be a good thing all round.

 And it would be much more convincing if Labour leaders recognised, that the City Council made a real mistake in introducing the WPBR pay scheme which has been judged by the Court of Session, Scotland's highest civil court, as 'unfit for purpose'.

 More interest and enthusiasm from Glasgow's constituency MSPs wouldn't go amiss either.

For what it’s worth, I warmly welcome the support of politicians & members for work to finally deliver pay justice for women. But a bit of humility & self-awareness about your party’s dismal history on wouldn’t go amiss.

SNP - Conspiracy of Silence

So here's the issue - two Glasgow MSPs (Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf) have been asked a reasonable question about their use of public money to employ two SNP councillors who already have full-time, salaried jobs as senior elected members of Glasgow City Council.   But these two public servants (both long-serving ministers) refuse to answer, so what to do next? One regular reader suggests raising the matter on the floor of the Scottish Parliament which is a good idea, but requires an MSP who's prepared to put down a written question for Scottish Ministers to answer. So here's a list of activities which will help shine a light on what has been going on because as Lord Nolan once said apropos driving up standards in public life - 'daylight is the best disinfectant'.
