Glasgow Recycling

Glasgow City Council recently introduced a new recycling scheme which is targeted on 'compostable' food waste.

A month or so ago, the residents of the city (me included) were issued with small, new recycling bins and a year's supply of 'compostable' bags, in the hope that we will all put our household food waste into a bigger communal bin.

The deal being that the City Council's refuse service is then supposed to empty the larger communal on a weekly basis, or so they said at the time.

But the new service isn't working, as advertised anyway, because new communal bin hasn't been emptied for weeks.

So the end result is that things are far worse than before because the 'new' communal recycling bin is now very smelly and disgusting, as well as acting as acting a magnet to vermin for miles around.

Calls to the Council's refuse service (Land Services and Environmental Department) go unanswered for ages, presumably to discourage complaints, and even when you do get through no one can explain what the hell is going on.

I can't be the only Glaswegian who thinks the new service is completely useless and of things go on like this, I think people will stop using their recycling bins and just go back to the way we were before.

Which would be a shame, but what else are we all meant to do when the service is in such a terrible mess?
