Tawdry Behaviour

Tawdry behaviour by Westminster MPs is nothing new although up until recently the SNP has been scandal-free, relatively speaking at least.

But the political success the SNP has enjoyed in recent years brings its own problems, as two of the party's senior figures, Stewart Hosie and Angus MacNeil, are exposed for having  affairs with the same woman, Serena Cowdy.

The newspapers are having a field day with quotes from Serena, a political journalist, in which she describes herself as a "nut magnet" and from friends who say she had a 'thing' about nationalists and kept baking on about them being like the Mujahideen.

Now Nicola Sturgeon needs this kind of nonsense like she needs another hole in her head and the worry must be that the SNP is beginning to behave just like other political parties, once real power and influence start  to kick in.

The sex scandals are bad enough with The Sun rebranding the SNP as the 'Scottish Nookie Party' in today's from page, but real damage could be done with two other MPs suspended after allegations involving their financial dealings.

The following report in The Scotsman explains the background.

SNP’s Stewart Hosie and Angus MacNeil in alleged affairs with same woman

Stewart Hosie and Angus MacNeil are alleged to have had affairs with Serena Cowdy

By SCOTT MACNAB - The Scotsman

NICOLA Sturgeon’s re-election as First Minister was overshadowed yesterday by allegations that two senior married SNP MPs had affairs with the same woman.

The party’s deputy leader Stewart Hosie, 53, and Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil, 45, have allegedly each had a relationship with journalist Serena Cowdy, 36.

The First Minister did not broach the issue as she was formally re-elected as First Minister at Holyrood.

She was flanked by Shona Robison, Mr Hosie’s estranged wife and a close friend of the First Minister, underlining the dilemma which the situation poses for working relations within the party.

Mr Hosie is a hugely influential figure in the party after being elected deputy leader in 2014 and has been placed in charge of the summer drive which the SNP will launch to revive its campaign for Scottish independence.
