Car Crash Corbyn

Jeremy Corbyn has made some strange appointments to his shadow cabinet since assuming the Labour throne, but none more so than his decision to hand Lord Mike Watson a role as shadow education minister.

As many people know Mike fell from grace 10 years ago when he set fire to part of the Prestonfield Hotel after a night of heavy drinking with fellow MSPs.

Now Mike paid a very heavy price for his behaviour because he was sentenced to 16 months in prison and lost his seat as a Labour MSP in Glasgow, although he retained his place in the 'noble' House of Lords.

As a former trade union official with MSF (now part of Unite) Mike would have been wholly against the House of Lords, at one time anyway, but he has held on to this £300 a day (tax free) sinecure which he was awarded in 1997 after losing the selection contest for the Glasgow Govan Westminster seat.

After being expelled from Labour following his conviction Mike was readmitted to the party in 2012, but as education is an issue that is devolved to the Scottish Parliament it's difficult to see what an unelected Scottish politician can bring to policy debates in Westminster.

What a gift for the Conservatives who rightly point out the madness of Scottish politicians being able to influence education policy and legislation in England when English MPs have no say on such issues in the Scottish Parliament.

Yet another Corbyn car crash, if you ask me.
