South Lanarkshire (02/05/13)

Lots has been happening behind the scenes in recent days - in connection with the South Lanarkshire Council equal pay claims.

I was due to give evidence at a full-blown hearing on the Council's obligations under the 1999 Single Status (Equal Pay) Agreement - having prepared a detailed written Witness Statement.

But at the eleventh hour the Council suddenly advised the Employment Tribunal - that they did not have the evidence to support their legal arguments.

In other words the Council was unable to present a viable defence of its position - despite what it has been saying, quite vehemently, all these years.

Unbelievable - is the word that springs to my mind.

The upshot is that the evidence hearing did not proceed because the Council made very important concessions regarding the case put forward by Action 4 Equality Scotland and Fox and Partners Solicitors.

The Council has now been ordered to provide further pay information and other details which will assist in bringing the Action 4 Equality Scotland cases to a conclusion.

Rumours are rife within the Council and urgent meetings are being held all over the place - in an effort to steady the ship which, from where I'm standing, has been holed beneath the waterline - and is sinking fast.

The trade unions - who have been supporting the Council's position all this time - are also in disarray and there will be lots of angry members asking whether management and the trade unions are far too close - and too cosy with each other.

More details will follow in the days ahead, but if you have any interesting information to pass on - feel free to drop me a note, in confidence, to: markirvine@compuserve.com
