Gordon Brown intervened in the Labour leadership contest the other day with a speech in which spoke about 'Power with a Purpose'.

Now the real purpose of Gordon's speech was to put a spoke in the wheels of the red-hot favourite to win the Labour leadership race, Jeremy Corbyn, even though Gordon didn't mention the London MP by name.

I have to say I can't see anyone winning now but Corbyn because the majority of people who have a vote are not even bona fide Labour Party members, though you have to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all.

Andy Burnham, for example, was a committed New Labour man when Tony Blair was  Labour leader, but quickly morphed into a loyal 'Brownite' when Gordon Brown assumed the throne, only to complete a further transformation as a 'Milibander' once Ed had snatched the crown from his older brother, David.

In recent days Andy Burnham has been cosying up to the 'Corbynites' with soothing words about his ability to 'Unite' the party (if that's the right word) and promises to hand Jeremy a major role in his shadow cabinet, if Mr Chameleon wins the top job.

Andy Burnham was asked the other day if he thought Corbyn could be prime minister and said:

"I don’t know whether Jeremy wants to be prime minister, but he’s saying things that people are responding to … He started by saying that he wanted to produce a debate, that’s why he came into the race."

I suspect that Gordon 'Power with a Purpose' Brown is tearing his hair out at this minute along with the rest of the Labour leadership who must be asking themselves: "How did it ever come to this?"
