Stronger Scotland

I cast my vote in the general election at the weekend, a postal ballot, and I voted without a moment's hesitation for the SNP as I believe this will deliver a stronger voice for Scotland at Westminster.

Now regular readers know my view that Scottish Labour has lost its way and although the party's lack if interest in equal pay is a big factor, that's just one sign of a deeper malaise.

Where to start?

How about Gordon Brown, Labour's last Prime Minister, the man with the moral compass who spent much of the last parliament outside of the country, as a part-time MP in what is supposed to be a full-time House of Commons.

Now that is a real joke, yet things get worse when you hear that Jim Murphy (Labour's latest Scottish leader) is intent on serving a full five-year term if returned as the Westminster MP for Eastwood even though he is planning to stand in the next Scottish Parliament elections in 2016.

Much as I admire Jim's energy and 'can do' attitude it's obvious to everyone that, just like Gordon Brown, he can't be in two places at the same time.

So why do these otherwise intelligent people insist on taking the voters for fools?

If you ask me, the answer is the sense of entitlement that's grown up around Scottish Labour in recent years; gone are the selfless men and women of substance and integrity who have been replaced by people who believe that they deserve to be 'elevated' to the unelected House of Lords once their political careers are over.

I wonder whether Gordon Brown is right now bending Ed Miliband's ear to become a 'noble' Lord because that's how it happens, you know.

Jack (now Lord) McConnell can testify to that having been awarded a seat in the House Lords on Gordon Brown's recommendation after losing the 2007 Scottish Parliament elections, as Labour's last First Minister.

In other words while these individuals have some positive characteristics, they all give the unfortunate appearance of being 'in it' for themselves when the chips are down and that's why so many people are fed up with politicians.
