Mocking the Maniacs

Mel Brooks is probably best known as the creative genius of one of the best movies of all time, Blazing Saddles, and he is advocating a novel approach to tackle the sad individuals behind Islamist groups like the Islamic State - humour and ridicule.

The Telegraph introduces a quote from Brooks with the observation that ridiculing the enemy has always been able to do something bombs and straight reporting can’t because it chips away at evil and punctures an aggressor’s warped reality.

“Rhetoric does not get you anywhere, because Hitler and Mussolini are just as good at rhetoric. But if you can bring these people down with comedy, they stand no chance.” - as Brooks put it in describing The Producers, another of his well-known comedy films.

I agree and Boris Johnson, the London Mayor, has already thrown his tuppence-worth in by mocking these jihadists and sad losers and porn-obsessed wankers which I think is an apt description of people whose only power comes from the barrel of a gun.

I mean, Mohammed Emwazi or 'Jihadi John' hides behind a ridiculous mask while murdering an innocent human being for fun on live TV and this young, former student with no visible means of support spins a yarn that he was in Tanzania on 'safari' whereas his real purpose was to join up with Al-Shabbab terror group in neighbouring Somalia.

How dumb is that story?
