More Equal Than Others

The bizarre nature of the electoral college that the Labour Party is using to select new Scottish leaders is best demonstrated by looking at a specific example.

So let's look at one of the candidates, Neil Findlay, who will be entitled to 3 and not just 1 vote under the rules because the college is broken down into three sections: MSPs, MPs and MEPs; Individual Party Members; Trade Union Members.

Now Neil is an MSP and so is entitled to a vote in that section, but Neil must also be an individual Labour Party member and that gives him a second vote and having joined the Unite union (in 2012) according to the Scottish Parliament web site) that gives Neil a third vote in the trade union sections.

As I said is a previous blog site post this Alice in Wonderland arithmetic means that 80 = 10,000 = 300,0000.

And if you ask me with 'democratic' arrangements like this is it any wonder that so many Scots now regard the Labour Party as a joke.

Because what in the world is wrong with One Member One Vote (OMOV)?
