Tip My Hat

I was out for a celebratory drink the other night in Glasgow with some successful claimants from South Lanarkshire Council, the real stalwarts who were with Action 4 Equality Scotland from the very beginning and stayed the course right to the end.

Some of them gave evidence to the Employment Tribunal which was rather daunting,  intimidating even, but they all gave as good as they got and played a key role in convincing the tribunal members that the Council's job description was 'not fit to be relied upon' and otherwise 'unfit for purpose'.

So we had a great old time, remembering the early days and the long fight to win the arguments and hold South Lanarkshire Council to account over equal pay, which finally happened earlier this year.

And we recalled the completely craven behaviour of the trade unions who were supposed to be representing the interests of their low paid members, yet who for most of the time were effectively on the side of the Council, its senior managers and politicians.

But my abiding memory is of a group of lovely, courageous people who stood up and were counted when the chips were down, who did the right thing and who through their sheer effort and determination reaped a well deserved reward in the end.

I tip my hat to them - one and all.
