Politics and Religion

Lord Carey of Clifton
I'm all in favour of religious leaders getting involved in political debates, if they want to - so long as they don't expect any favours and are prepared to get as good as they give.

So let me say a word or two about the former Archbishop of Canterbury - George Carey - who attacked the Prime Minister the other day for what he called 'aiding and abetting' discrimination against Christians.

Now this does make me laugh and explains why certain religious leaders should stay out of politics altogether - because the proposals supporting same sex marriage in the House of Commons - enjoyed cross party support.

The Labour party and the Lib Dems were just as much in favour - if not more so - so why should the former Archbishop single out the Prime Minister and the Conservatives?

More to the point - why didn't the leaders of the other parties stand up and say this themselves - instead of sitting back and allowing the Tories to take the heat for all the rest.

Now the answer to this is obvious - it's because it suits Labour and the Lib Dems to keep their heads down and let the Conservatives take all the flak - but on a cross-party issue it's the wrong thing to do and a very cowardly way to behave.

And while I'm at it the charge of discrimination comes from the former Archbishop - who is aslo known as Lord Carey of Clifton - a lifetime peer who sits in the House of Lords influencing the passage of all kinds of legislation without anyone electing him to that position, of course.

The fact is that Lord Carey sits in the House of Lords courtesy of who he is - a former Archbishop of the Church of England - rather than whom he repesents or what he has to say.

And as all the opinion polls show - the Church of England is way out of step with the views of its own members and the wider public - when it comes to a range of issues including same sex marriage and women priests.

Yet the wider views of the public are simply brushed aside and ignored - when it suits the  convenience of religious leaders in the House of Lords and inside their own church.
