Committee On Virgins


Life is full of wonderful contradictions - you've got to admit.

On one occasion a serious author author - Salman Rushdie - writes an obscure book about the Islamic faith - The Satanic Verses - and all hell breaks loose.

The Ayatollah of Iran swiftly issues a 'fatwa' - a religious order - proclaiming that it is the duty of all good Muslims to murder Salman Rushdie on sight for insulting Islam.

Yet the 'religious believers' who are so keen to murder another human being - have never read the book and can offer no insight into its contents - simply that's it is or was 'blasphemous'.

I suppose it's a bit like the Pope or Archbishop of Canterbury demanding that Monty Python be put to death in some cruel way - for making 'Life of Brian'.     

Some years later the Scots comedian - Billy Connolly - does a wickedly funny piece in one of his stand up routines which slates all religions - but does a particular number on Islam.

Yet nobody cries 'blashphemy' - or calls upon devout Muslims to cut off the comedian's head - while it's still attached to the rest of his body.

So here's a YouTube video of Billy Connolly at his irreverent best - I can't imagine living in a society where to poke fun at suicide killers - would be a religious crime.

SNP - Conspiracy of Silence

So here's the issue - two Glasgow MSPs (Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf) have been asked a reasonable question about their use of public money to employ two SNP councillors who already have full-time, salaried jobs as senior elected members of Glasgow City Council.   But these two public servants (both long-serving ministers) refuse to answer, so what to do next? One regular reader suggests raising the matter on the floor of the Scottish Parliament which is a good idea, but requires an MSP who's prepared to put down a written question for Scottish Ministers to answer. So here's a list of activities which will help shine a light on what has been going on because as Lord Nolan once said apropos driving up standards in public life - 'daylight is the best disinfectant'.
