Stop Making Sense

Criticism: A Commons committee has concluded the Government's handling of the PIP implant scandal was inadequate
Stop Making Sense is a film about one of my favourite groups - Talking Head - and its lead singer David Byrne - who has Scottish roots by the way.

Here's a You Tube introducing the film - http://youtu.be/9P6Pi1JaIm8 - which was directed by Jonathan Demme - who also shot 'Silence of the Lambs' and 'Fly Away Home'.

Anyway the point of this post is not Holywood - but PIP breast implants.

Or to be more specific the nonsense coming from Westminster MPs who said yesterday that the stance taken by the NHS - on replacing PIP breast implants - "flies in the face of common sense".

Apparently this barmy bunch of MPs are calling on the NHS to replace breast implants - if women want them replaced - whereas at the moment the PIP implants will only be removed at public expense

So to put it more crudely - the NHS will take them out (for health reasons) - but will not put them back in again (for cosmetic reasons).

And honourable members on the House of Commons Health Committee - think this is wrong - they think that it means patients being operated on twice.

The 'solution' they've come up with is that patients should have the option of being sliced open only once - but on the basis that they pay for the second part of the procedure, i.e. having their implants replaced.

'Two for the price of one' or 'buy one get one free' - so to speak.

Now I can only speak for myself - but I think that is completely crazy.

Because if women want their implants replaced - then what we're really talking about is cosmetic surgery  and why should that be subsidised by the public purse.

Any women who had implants inserted in the first place - must have paid for the operation - unless they are amongst the tiny minority who had the procedure performed - for purely health reasons.

Which begs the question:

'If they found the money to have breast implants in the first place - against all good medical advice - then why can't they use their own money to pay for the operation again?"

Am I right - or have I just stopped making sense?
