Hacked Off

The sight of celebrities and politicians receiving thousands of pounds for having their phones hacked years ago - has been thrown into stark relief.

By the news that one of the killers of James Bulger - Robert Thomson - is also seeking a big payout.

Apparently lawyers acting for Robert Thompson (29) - say that they plan to take legal action against News International - that could see the killer paid tens of thousands of pounds.

The legal action was initiated after Scotland Yard informed Robert Thomson - that his voice mails had been targeted by the News of the World between 2002 and 2007.

What damage - if any - this caused to Robert Thomson is unclear - yet he still stands to benefit if the legal action is successful.

The mother of James Bulger - Denise Fergus is understandably angry at the prospect of her son's killer  benefiting - even indirectly - from his crime and has called on the government and the Press Complaints Commission to intervene.

The problem is that many other people have already received large payouts - even when there is no evidence that they suffered any loss or harm - from the phone hacking scandal.

Including Lord John Prescott - Labour's former deputy leader - who pocketed £40,000 if I remember correctly.

Paying compensation to people who have suffered demonstrable harm or loss is one thing - handing over money for no good reason is quite another.

So I hope that on this occasion - unless there is good reason to do otherwise - News International makes a stand.
