Until Someone Loses An Eye

'All fun and games until someone loses an eye' - is a saying - possibly even the title - of a book by the Scottish writer Christopher Brookmyre.

I haven't read Christopher's book - sadly - but I know what he's getting at - as most people will.

A vulnerable woman was attacked and raped in Glasgow's George Square last night - in a tent at the anti-capitalism protest camp.

The criminals are the men who attacked this woman - and they deserve to be hunted down by the police.

Personally speaking - if they have a history of sex crimes - I would put them in prison  for a very long time.

But the organisers of the protest should also be reflecting on the stupidity of pitching their tents in George Square - without anyone's permission.

The Herald newspaper reports today that the Glasgow camp had become a magnet for the homeless - and other people on the streets.

Not only that - but the protesters had been giving them food and clothing - and offering them shelter.

In other words - this was an 'accident' waiting to happen.

Not least because there are supervised facilities for the homeless in Glasgow - where staff are trained to deal with trouble - and know who the troublemakers are in advance.

The protesters seem to me to be a nice enough bunch of young people - well intentioned  perhaps - but that's not good enough - because they are also hopelessly naive - a potential danger to themselves and others.

So I hope they now realise it's time to pack up their tents - and go home.
