Trough-Loving Councillors
The UK government is well on its way to installing new elected police commissioners - in England and Wales.
The idea is to have an elected politician working closely with the chief constable to fight crime - and it's an idea that seems to have captured people's imagination of - in some parts of the country at least.
Former army officer - Colonel Tim Collins - who first came to public attention for his stirring eve-of-battle speech to his troops in the Iraq War in 2003 - has thrown his hat into the ring, for example.
Tim has applied to be selected as a Conservative police commissioner candidate - and wants to head-up the force in Kent - the garden of England as everyone knows.
Colonel Collins has apparently been inspired by the former New York Mayor - Rudy Giuliani - who reduced crime with tougher policing policies which became known as 'zero tolerance' policing.
Colonel Collins is certainly taking no prisoners on the public relations front - he gives both barrels to potential rivals in the following quote.
"This is a job for someone energetic and who is willing to work with the chief constable."
It is important that it doesn't become just a talking shop for knackered old policemen or a sunset gig for some trough-loving councillor."
Now I'm fond of a colourful pharse or two myself - but you've got to be impressed by 'sunset gig for trough-loving councillor' - because that is truly inspired.
