Freedom to Believe

The Liberal Democrats are everyone's favourite punch-bag these days.

So I'd just like to say three cheers for the party's Scottish leader - Willie Rennie - for standing up and speaking his mind on the subject of same sex marriage.

The Lib Dem leader took issue with Scotland's Catholic bishops - for seeking to "impose" their views on ordinary members of the church.

Which is good to see and hear - because what business is it of the Catholic church - or any other church for that matter - to interfere in people's private lives?

Willie Rennie is reported as saying:

"To threaten to invoke some sort of block vote is an affront to liberal democracy and one that we must challenge. Many individual Catholics have told me they will not be following their leaders against the issue of equality for same-sex marriage.

"We are not imposing anything on the Church, so what I find difficult is that they want to impose on everyone else. A liberal Scotland is where everyone can have their own freedom of thought and belief."

Well said, sir.

The important thing about marriage is the commitment of the two people involved - towards each other - their gender is irrelevant or at least it should be.

The church seems threatened at the thought of two men - or two women - declaring their love for each other by getting married - but for the life of me I can't understand why.
