Film Star Pensions

The Scottish Labour party issued a press release yesterday - attacking the SNP Government over high pay levels in the NHS.

Shock horror - Labour in Scotland has just discovered that over 3,000 NHS north of the border are paid over £100,000 a year.

But this has been going on for years and years - including the eight years when Labour and the Lib Dems were in control of the Scottish Parliament.

Lots of hospital consultants, GPs and senior NHS executives - are paid well over £100,000 these days - and so are lots of officials in Scottish local government.

Though I haven't heard Labour making a fuss up until now - and only in the context of attacking the SNP - instead of raising a serious point in the Scottish Parliament.

Labour's health spokesperson Jackie Baillie said:

“The SNP promised to ‘cut the pay bill of the highest earners’. Yet there are now over 3,000 executives and employees in the NHS paid film star salaries of over £100,000."

All I would say is that if Labour has something serious to say - then it should put forward a clear proposal which can be considered on its merits - by all parties in the Scottish Parliament.

And it should not just look at high pay levels in Scotland's NHS - local councils, universities and colleges should be included as well - since they all rely on public funds.

Labour controlled councils have shown no interest in dealing with 'film star salaries' in the public sector up until now - it has to be said.

In fact they're still supporting the trade unions - in their crazy defence of final salary pension schemes - which give the higher paid film star pensions to go with their film star salaries.

Yet the Labour party doesn't see the contradiction - doesn't seem to give a hoot.

So I just wish Labour would get real - and stop all this yah-boo politics.

Because the voters are not impressed at their antics.
