Fighting Talk

Prime Minister - David Cameron - delivered an upbeat leader's speech this afternoon - in winding up the Tory party conference.

Politics in Manchester has been dominated by cats for the past 24-hours - courtesy of a good natured spat - between Theresa May and Kenneth Clarke.

But David Cameron  ended his speech on combative note - talking about dogs - as a metaphor for state of the British economy:

"It's not the size of the dog in the fight", he exclaimed. "It's the size of the fight in the dog!"

Boom boom.

But it went down very well in the hall - it has to be said - and will no doubt prove equally effective on the telly as well.

David Cameron also used the opportunity to twist the knife into his political opponents - over  the booing of Tony Blair's name - at last week's Labour party conference.

"We don't boo former leaders of our party" - the Prime Minister declared - to great effect.

How the Labour leadership must regret the sheer stupidity of Len McCluskey - and the other union delegates - who jeered the mere mention Tony Blair's name in Liverpool.

What idiots - an open goal for David Cameron and he took full advantage of his opportunity.

Overall the speech was long on rhetoric and short on substance - but it was unfailingly optimistic - which was something of a surprise.

One good practical point was a commitment to end the scandal of abysmally low adoption rates - for children less than 1 year old.

The PM promised that under his leadership this scandal would end - that adoption  shouldn't be a matter for party politics - or political correctness.

And you know what - I absolutely agree with him.
