Press Freedom

The Guardian would have us all believe that press freedom is under attack.

Because of the steps being taken by the Metropolitan Police to force the newspaper to reveal its sources - over the News of the World phone hacking scandal.

Now under normal circumstances I would support a jourrnalist or newspaper keeping the source of their information secret.

Since guaranteeing people's anonymity is often the only way to protect 'whistleblowers' and expose wrongdoing - by the great and the good.

But on this occasion the alleged informant is a serving police office - who was allegedly releasing highly confidential information - on a selective basis - about an ongoing police investigation.

In other words that the alleged informant was not exposing any wrongdoing - or acting in the wider public interest - but was instead actively undermining the work of the police - and the criminal  justice system.

So on this occasion the Guardian seems to me to be on very shaky ground since no one is above the law - including serving police officers and journalists .
