South Lanarkshire

A regular reader from South Lanarkshire has been in touch.

The reader is not impressed at the response of her local MSP - James Kelly, the Labour member for Rutherglen - whom she met recently to discuss Single Status, Equal Pay and Freedom of Information.

Apparently James Kelly has simply passed on a copy of a letter he's received from the council's chief executive - without expressing an opinion about any of the issues involved.

All I can say is that MSPs usually have opinions on just about every issue under the sun - that's their job to stand up and speak out - not sit on the fence.

Labour leader - Iain Gray - certainly spoke out about Freedom of Information during the Scottish election campaign.

And fair play to him - he gave the government pelters.

For not complying with a decision of the Scottish Information Commissioner and mounting an expensive and time wasting appeal - with public money - to the Court of Session.

So if your MSP is not as supportive as you think they could or should be - then let them know how you feel.

Tell your friends, family and relatives - because that's what local democracy is all about - it's not a spectator sport.

The fact is that lots of people in Rutherglen have equal pay claims.

Presumably they would all like to know what their local politicians think of a situation - where South Lanarkshire Council won't release pay information - that is freely available in other Scottish councils.
