More Chaos in South Lanarkshire

The newpapers reported yesterday that pressure was piling onto senior officials in South Lanarkshire Council - with a former minister and leader of the council calling for sackings.

Tom McCabe, MSP accused senior managers of failing the council and called for “heads to roll”.

Tom McCabe is quoted as saying: “We’ve a tier of senior officials, most earning in excess of £100,000, jockeying for position and settling scores and then coming up with accounting errors of £40m.

“Heads have to roll here. The people and politicians of South Lanarkshire deserve better and these officials, of which there are more than enough, need to consider their positions or move on.”

Quite possibly - but whose heads and how are they to be chopped off - because councillors appear to have been getting involved in the business of settling scores as well - not just officials.

So who is holding councillors to account for their behaviour?

The Herald reported yesterday that the Labour members of the administration boycotted a meeting of their own council - and that concerns were mounting about the breakdown in relations between top officials and the political leadership.

Even by the standards of Scottish local government this these are extraordinary events - so let's hope Scottish government ministers are paying close attention.
