Open and Shut

The Times newspaper ran an impassioned leader article the other day - about a row over the BBC's refusal to open up its books to the National Audit Office.

The editorial argued that the issue was open and shut - that as a public sector body - the BBC's accounts should be open to proper scrutiny.

Quite so.

The article went on to say that: "The BBC is, after all, a public service organisation that serves the licence payer. It is not a fiefdom of its management".

Correct again.

Translating this into equal pay speak is easy.

For the BBC, read South Lanarkshire Council - and for the National Audit Office, read Freedom of Information.

What happens to public money - is always a matter of legitimate public interest - only those with something to hide would argue otherwise.
